Directing / Devising / Writing
From 1997-2002 I was co-director of The Weird Sisters theatre company with Alison Goldie. We devised and produced three shows that toured nationally and internationally, winning 5 international theatre awards. Together we wrote the comedy dramas It’s Uncanny! and Loveplay, and with Cal McCrystal the sketch show The Weird Sisters Get Around. http://weirdsisterstheatrecompany.wordpress.com
In 2003 I adapted Christina Rossetti’s Goblin Market for the stage. This production, also composed by Conor Mitchell, was first seen at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast in 2003, and then at George Square Theatre in Edinburgh in 2005. I directed both productions. Goblin Market has now been published by Josef Weinberger and is being produced by the University of Cumbrai in 2009.
Since 2002, as well as devising The Mother’s Bones, I have written the book of a new musical, Missing Mel, composed by Conor Mitchell. The show is set in a modern comprehensive school in which a VI form girl goes missing. Missing Mel was produced at Edinburgh Fringe in 2008 and subsequently transferred to the Cochrane Theatre, London. Extracts from the work were shown to an all-party group of MPs in February 2007 at Portcullis House.
From 2004-2008 I was Associate Director for Youth Music Theatre:UK
www.youth-music-theatre.org.uk and devised a number of projects with young people including Over the Edge, Respect and, with international artists Nancy Spanier and Paul Oertel www.performanceinventions.org, Persona and Rare Dreams.
In July/August 2008 I directed The Silver Bough at Aberdeen International Youth Festival, composed by Simon McBurney, written by Iain Finlay Macleod and choreographed by Struan Leslie with musical direction by Simon Deacon.
As a writer I have also written sketches for BBC Radio 4’s Loose Ends, a critical book on Christina Rossetti (Writers and Their Work Series, 1998, repr. 2007), and a number of published essays in nineteenth century literature and culture. I was Lecturer in English and Drama at the University of Southampton 1989-1997.
